BLGU: Call for Applications 2015

The Balkans let’s get up! programme connects theory and practice of active citizenship. To strengthen civic involvement in our Balkan Region, we provide capacities for your very own civic idea. In one of the two international Spring Schools you can first discuss relevant societal topics, learn aspects of project development, meet with experts, and develop your own project ideas. This year we set the focus on the topics: Rethinking, Reusing, Recycling – Community-Based Activism (taking place in Kosovo) and Gender and Democracy (taking place in Montenegro). However, your later project ideas do not have to be connected to the topic, they can evolve from other fields of your interest as well. After the Spring Schools, there is a possibility for project grants and the participation in further trainings on project management and impact evaluation.

For applying, your educational and occupational background and experience in international exchange or project management are welcome but no precondition. We ask for them in order to be able to compose a diverse group of participants for the seminars and therefore we also encourage persons with e.g. no experience abroad or no previous scholarships to apply.

Furthermore, Balkans, let’s get up! supports and encourages people regardless of their ethnicity, religion or belief, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity. If you are motivated to play your active part in your society, you are the right person to apply for the Balkans, let’s get up! Programme.

Each of the seminars is conducted in a country in the Balkan Region. The working language is English.

The requirements are:

  • Age between 18 and 27

  • Willingness to contribute to your society with a civic initiative

Or Spring School Gender and Democracy, May 9th – 17th 2015, Montenegro

In two different international Spring Schools we will discuss innovative approaches to sustainable forms of living, gender diversity and democratization, to what democracy means on different levels of society, and which forms of active citizenship are possible to individuals and groups. You will meet like-minded people from all over the Balkans. The Spring Schools can be the starting point for realizing your project, alone or in a team.

Project Management Training, June 28th – 3rd 2015, place to be determined

The best project drafts will be selected and you will be invited to a Project Management Training. During this week we will support you in further developing your project plans. Various aspects will be planned according to the particular needs of your individual projects. Topics such as time management, team work, communication, public relations, and fundraising will be a part of it.

Between the Project Management Seminar and the Evaluation and Perspectives Seminar you will have time to implement your project. You will be accompanied by experienced Mentors.

Europe next to Europe Research Fellowship Program at the New Europe College Institute for Advanced Study CALL FOR APPLICATIONS for the academic year 2015-16

The Europe next to Europe Program offers research Fellowships to young scholars in the humanities and social sciences. The program addresses candidates coming from European countries that are not yet members of the European Union, or which have a less consolidated position within it, targeting in particular the Western Balkans (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Macedonia, Serbia), Turkey, Cyprus. Candidates are welcome to apply with projects on topics of their choice, for in-residence Fellowships at the New Europe College in Bucharest, Romania. The Europe next to Europe Program is sponsored by the Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (Sweden).

The host institution, New Europe College-Institute for Advanced Study (NEC) supports its Fellows by providing excellent conditions for their research and by establishing a strong and productive network among academics in the country and beyond. The institute has acquired a unique position in the region and has established itself as a research center of international reputation.

Beyond the particular geographic focus of this program, the merits of the candidates will be decided exclusively on the basis of the quality and feasibility of their individual projects. It is not our intention to propose an overarching scientific theme against which the appropriateness of this or that project proposed by the candidates might be measured. We are, however, interested in a number of larger questions that might inspire the applicants. Thus, projects may address aspects related to our common past and to the rich texture of interrelations that could be unveiled; analyze shared features of culture and art in this region, or seemingly more down-to-earth customs of daily life; they might gauge the weight of the historical inheritance in shaping current attitudes and in (possibly) explaining recent conflicts; identify and compare different – sometimes even divergent – developments stemming from the inclusion of this or that country in a different larger area of influence: the Habsburg Empire or the Ottoman one; look into the complex question of religious beliefs and of their impact on present-day attitudes, and into the relationship between such beliefs and processes of nation-building; or inquire into the ethnic make-up of the region and into the ways in which it has been instrumentalized at various times; they might also choose to consider gender issues, in a region that has been, overtime, predominantly “patriarchal”. In paying attention to current challenges, projects may investigate the diverse political, economic and social arrangements and dynamics in these countries, and conjecture how they speak for their prospects of integration into the EU, or for the strengthening of their position within it.

Candidates can apply for one academic year (10 months, starting October, 2015), or one term (5 months, starting October, 2015, or March, 2016). Once chosen, fellows are expected to take part in the weekly seminar at the institute together with the other scholars present at NEC, and in other scientific events organized by NEC. They have the opportunity to profit from NEC’s widespread international network and its high-quality guest lecturers program. The institute’s working languages are English, French, and German; a good command of English is required. Fellows are assisted in all practical matters concerning travel, residence, and research in Bucharest. Toward the end of their stay, they are required to summarize their research outcomes in a scholarly paper (in English, French, or German).

Fellows are granted a monthly stipend of 700 € plus accommodation and travel expenses. In addition to their residence period in Bucharest, they are offered a one-month research trip abroad to an institution of their choice.
